Woman Work:

Explanation lines (1-4)

Reference: These lines have taken from the poem “Women Work” written by Maya Angelou.

Context: The poetess describes her daily routine or activities. She leads very hard life. She has every day to attend to her children, arrange and mend their clothes, clean the floor and buy the buy food from the shop. In this way, she spends mechanical and dull life. There is no moment of rest and leisure in her life.

Explanation:

The poetess is discussing the problem of a domestic woman. She has to tend her children. It is her duty to mend the clothes. The floor is always dirty, she washes it. She has to go to shop to buy different eatables and useable things. The poetess is mentioning the dull and drab life of doing domestic cures.

In these lines poetess actually highlights the boring work that she does not do eagerly and keenly. She just does as to her duty but inwardly she is avoiding and protesting against dull and drab work.

Explanation:

She has to fry the chicken, the chicken which she brought from market. It is her duty to dry all the wet babies. Everyone is on dining table, she serves them. The garden is full of weeds. She has to clear these weeds. Pressing of clothes is also her duty. The little kids are always dirty; it is her duty to clean them. She has to cut the cane. The hut is always dirty so she has to maintain.

Actually, the woman is fed up from her domestic work. She has to do all the above mentioned works without any help, and interval. Doing of all these things is very difficult for anyone, especially alone.

Explanation:

The woman in this poem is fed up from her daily routine life. The drudgery (labor) of work has not decreased her dreams of an ideal life. She requests to sun shine for its blessings. Raining is always sweet for every human being. She wants raining on her body. She yearns (longs) for the dewdrops. She requests the dewdrops to cool her brow.

     Actually, the woman yearns to participate on nature around her. She longs for the blessings of sunshine and raining.

Explanation:

She wishes to enjoy herself in natural objects. She implores to the storm to take her way with its fiercest wind. She wants to float across the sky. So, that she may take rest. She is fed up from her daily routine life; she likes to be in nature. Nature is source of happiness in its every shape. Whether the wind is fiercest or not, it will provide blessing for human beings.

Actually, she is not satisfied with her domestic cures, and no one from her close companions is helping her. So, she is wishing the company of natural objects. She thinks that nature can give her real relaxation and internal peace of mind.

Explanation:

She is tired and fed up from her daily routine life. She requests to the natural objects to provide her entertainment and enjoyment. She implores to the snowflakes to fall on her to cover her fully. When the snowflakes will fall on her, she would enjoy their company. There covering of body will be considered as cool kissing. Perhaps, she is fed up from the hot kisses of her husband. She wants to take one night rest.

Actually, nature is great source of pleasure for everyone. The working woman yearns to participate in nature around her. She is ready to develop her friendship with all natural objects. She wishes to lose and find herself in nature, mountain, oceans, leaf and stone, star shine and moon glow and etc. she has no other help that is why she is taking the help of these natural objects.
