Explanation lines (1-4)

Reference: These lines have been taken from the poem “Leisure”, written by William Devise.

Context: In this poem the poet is criticizing (تنقید کرنا) to the intense (شدید) materialism (مادیت پرستی) of modern life. Modern man has involved and devoted himself in collecting and earning money. He has not time to enjoy real beauty that is hidden in nature. His busy life and is craze (جنون) of collecting money has made his life full of worries and tensions.      

Explanation:

The poet William Davies is of the view that life is full of cares, worries, anxieties (پریشانی) and tensions. We have no spare time to look significance (اہمیت) of natural objects. We do not have time to enjoy and rejoice (لطف اندوز ہونا) nature. The cows and sheep stand beneath the branches but we are worse than sheep and cows. We have no time to look at the beautiful trees.

The poet, actually, is criticizing our modern life. Hurry and worry are our two main problems. But one thing is clear that sheep, cows have no such problems as the man of 21st century.

Poet mentions that when we cross the woods or forest, we do not pay attention to the birds and animals. The squirrels hide their nuts in grass, the peacocks dance, the birds sing and the animal roam to enjoy the nature, but modern, we are unable to watch them and notice them. We are so much busy in our routine life that we miss ordinary pleasures (سادہ خوشیاں). The streams are full of stars and seem like skies at night but we miss them. The poet has used a beautiful simile.

The poet emphasizes (زور دینا) in these lines the beauty of nature. Animal, trees, forests, day light, streams are the symbols (علامات)of nature. We’ll only aware specification of the elements when we give spare time to observe these elements.

Explanation:

The poet has personified (مجسّم بنانا) beauty. He narrates that we are so busy in our routine life that we miss beauty’s glance. We have no time to watch how she dances and how she smiles. Beauty is trying to attract him by her smiling face and eyes and by dancing feet but he is unable to give her time due to lack of time.

Actually, literature runs on two levels. On the surface level, it is beauty of woman while on the other hand, it may be the natural beauty dancing around him every where.

Explanation:

The poet concludes (نتیجہ نکالنا) this stanza well. He is of the opinion that if we are leading this type of life that is totally ignorant of significance of nature and full of worries, anxieties and tensions; it is not life. We are only passing the days.

The last lines tell real theme of the poem portrays (تصویر کشی کرنا) bitter condition of life that is only poor life. Definitely, man cannot get spiritual relief of he runs away real charm of life that is hidden in natural beauty.
