Context: The poet describes his experience after he has completed apple picking in a garden. He wants to tell us that man wants to perform many ambitions and programs of life, but he has a little energy to perform them. He is tired with his labor and goes to sleep. The dreams and ambitions of man’s life may color his dreams. He may see the unfulfilled tasks of his life in his dreams.

After Apple Picking is a great symbolic poem. The poet, Robert Frost uses a lot of symbolism in this poem.
The setting of the poem is that a farmer is picking the apples. His two-pointed ladder is stick against the tree and going towards heaven. He has filled a lot of barrels with apples, but still, there is a barrel, which is empty. Although he has picked most of the apples, yet there are some apples still to be picked. The farmer is dead tired.
The farmer is a symbol of man; apples are human desires and ladder is perhaps the symbol of man’s relation with God.

Explanation:

The poet mingles the world of reality and dream in this poem and especially in these lines. The farmer, the spokesman of the poet, is feeling that there is an essence of winter sleep. The scent of the apples is coming. He is hanging between the world of reality and sleep. He cannot remove the strange sight from his eyes and brain. He is dreaming that the snow, which he got early in the morning from the world of hoary (snowy) grass, is melting. Different things are taking shape from his dreaming, and he is not sure of their identity.
These lines are full of symbols. Perhaps, the winter sleep is the symbol of the eternal sleep, snow may be the symbol of life, morning, perhaps, is the start of life, etc. the poet discusses the poem on both levels quite successfully.

Explanation:
The poet mentions that magnified apples are appearing in his dream. Sometimes the stem (hot weather) and at times blossom end. Every fleck is clear to the poet. His in step arch has not only maintained him but also the pressure of the ladder. He feels that the ladder. He feels that the ladder is moving with the branches of the tree. The farmer hears the sound on the apples falling in the cellar bin.
These lines are philosophical and narrate the philosophy of the poet. He discusses the topic in a mystic style. He mingles the world of reality and dreams in these lines. He discusses the topic on both levels. His spokesman, the farmer, shows his philosophy.

The farmer is fed up of apple picking. He is tired of plucking the apples. But it is interesting to note that he desires for it, there are a thousand apples still to be plucked. Whether an apple falls on the ground or not, whether it is bruised (injured) or spiked or not, all apples will have to go to the cider-apple heap.
Whether a wish is completed or not, ends in this temporary life. Although the poet has used apples a symbol of disease, yet perhaps he is discussing the life of a man. The final rest of man is death.

Explanation:

The farmer is not assuring of his sleep. A heavy sleep is hovering on him, but he is not sure of the identity of sleep. Perhaps, his sleep is long like a woodchuck or ordinary human sleep.
The poet is not certain that whether it is an eternal sleep of human sleep. We pray it may be some human sleep.
