A POISON TREE NOTES




Explanation lines 1-4:

Reference: These lines have been taken the poem ‘Poison Tree’ written by William Black.

Context: The poet describes the development of hatred in him for his enemy. In his point of view, the feelings of anger if suppressed give birth to malice enmity and hypocrisy.  

Explanation:

The poet William Black mentions that he was angry with his friend. He expressed his grief, and his wrath ended. On the other hand, once he was angry with his enemy, he did not express his anger, and it grew.

In fact, the poet is of the opinion that friends do forgive but enemies do not. If anger is expressed, it will finish. Friends can forget, but enemies nurse their hatreds.

Explanation:

The poet watered the plant of hatred with his tears round the clock. He was providing light to the tree of hatred with his smiles. He made deceitful wiles (tricks) punish his enemy.

The poet talks of the nourishment of hatred. The process of nourishment demands care and love abut the poet is nourishing it with hatred. He wants to punish his enemy in any condition.

Explanation:

The poet’s plant of hatred grew very quickly. It bore a bright apple. His enemy was greedy. He saw and wished that Apple. He was also aware that the poet owned it.

The poet explains well about the process of hatred. The fruit became the source of enemy’s killing. There are a lot of contrast as friend and foe, love and hate, trust and deceit.

Explanation:

The last extract is very impressive with the arrival of night; his foe entered in the garden and stole that Apple. As a result, in the morning, he was dead, and the poet was triumphal to see it.

The act of stealth is committed at night. The time of darkness is associated with evil. Apple reminds us the Garden of Eden and temptation. Satan deceived Eve in the garden of DEIN. EVE was impressed by Satan. In the end, hatred wins.
